What is the College Savings Plan of Nebraska?

The Nebraska legislation that authorizes the program is LB 1003 which was passed during the 2000 legislative session. The program began January 1, 2001. The College Savings Plan of Nebraska is a Qualified Tuition Program under Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. The 2000 Nebraska Legislature designed this program to encourage the funding of higher education through savings in a public trust. The program Trustee is the Nebraska State Treasurer. Funds selected for the College Savings Plan of Nebraska are chosen by the Nebraska Investment Council with the assistance of Union Bank and Trust and the Nebraska State Treasurer. Union Bank and Trust serves as Program Manager and provides managerial, marketing and custodial services for the program. When the beneficiary of the account is ready to attend an institution of higher education, the principal and interest saved on his/her behalf will be available to help cover qualified higher education expenses.
